We are thrilled to have Seble Negatu from the Immunology Graduate Group join the lab as our first official graduate student! Seble received her bachelors degree from the University of Georgia and completed the PREP program at the University of Rochester before making her way to Penn. We are so lucky to welcome her to the group!

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA and both of my parents are from Ethiopia. Outside of school, I spent most of my childhood growing up within the Ethiopian community in Atlanta.

Why Immunology? My passion for studying Immunology stems from my personal experiences of seeing people affected by infectious diseases, particularly viruses. I am continuously fascinated by how the immune system can precisely coordinate a cell network to elicit anti-viral responses.

What is on your in-the-zone playlist? This is a hard one. My in-the-zone playlists are quite diverse. I have 3 main playlists that are continuously being updated: Habesha Vibes, TBT and Lituation. The first playlist has all of my favorite Ethiopian and Eritrean songs. TBT consists of major throwbacks with songs from Ashanti, to OutKast, to Sean Paul. The third playlist is a hip-hop and rap mix featuring artists like J. Cole, Young Thug and Future.

What is a non-science goal you hope to accomplish before you graduate? I would love to master all the features on my DSLR camera. Considering Philadelphia has many murals and gardens, I believe this would be the best time for me to establish a photography portfolio.
